An Unexpected Reunion – Skaven pt. 2

As unexpectedly as the Stormvermin landed in my lap they turned tail and ran, just as Skaven are want to do. I had barely begun, thinking I’d have weeks to do a job worthy of my brush, when Scott contacted me this morning, now yesterday, say he needed them for a game the next day. Not wanting to hand him minis with a terrible case “ugly phase” I got settled in for a marathon session, for me anyway, of painting little, ugly men.

I didn’t time it and I’m not a fast painter but I do know it took me in the ballpark of 12 hours to paint these little bastards. Given time I would have applied verdigris to all the them and, well, just done a better job over all. I do really like the pink tails though.

In the end I learned one, very valuable lesson, I don’t like painting at this pace.

I might have learned a second lesson, but it’s going to take a bit more testing to be sure, and that’s that I don’t want to paint an army. I love variety, I want to paint a little of everything. Even the idea of painting more than 5 guys in the same style annoys me. Maybe it’s the lifelong artist in me that wants to pursue new challenges but take my time and get them right? I don’t know but it’s something to think about.

Whatever the result the Stormvermin have come and gone, 20 models unfinished but over half done. I don’t know how to rank this in my monthly quota. Does this count as 20 painted models? Yeah, sure, what the hell. That’ll bring me to 27 models for the month of April, go me.

    1. Thank you and thanks for always being in my comments with a supportive voice, it means a lot. I’m certainly not upset with how they turned out, just disappointed I didn’t get more time with them. In the future I think I’ll leave that kind of blitzing to my former teenage self as well.

    1. Thanks man. Good luck with your batch-painting, you got it. My only advice is to set a timer to go off every 30 minutes just to stand up at least. I’m looking forward to their wartime correspondence and seeing them in their livery.
